Products and Solution

Here are some sample products dedicated to the marine market, their uses aboard vessels can be tailors to meet the layout of the ship and work with the other systems onboard.

FREQUENCY CONVERTERS

MGEC supplies frequency converters that are the ideal solution for the transformation of mains frequency into a customized frequency according to the client’s demands. The frequency converters are distinguished by the combination of low operational costs paired with minimal space requirements and high efficiency.

Frequency converters are built-in in conventional industrial cabinets and offer the power range of 10-32 kVA with single-phase output and 10-600 kVA with a three-phase output.

Frequency converters are available with 50, 60, 200, 380 and 400 Hz frequencies.

For installation into 19-inch-cabinets this technology is available up to a rating of 5KVA

SHORE POWER CONVERTOR

All over the globe there are diverse voltages and frequencies. This leaves yacht owners with a major problem during docking times. The incompatibility of on-board networks and port/local mains means that even during docking the yacht has to be supplied with power using the on-board generator – a loud and expensive necessity with negative impact on the environment.

The shore power converter from MGEC adjusts the local network to the on-board supply and takes over the ship’s power supply synchronously and without any interruption. This saves fuel, conserves resources and prevents unnecessary noise pollution by running generators.

UNINTERRUPTIBLE POWER SUPPLY (UPS SYSTEMS)

Power Range <2KVA for Ships / Yachts

UPS-Systems out of P-NT series were developed especially for maritime use for protection from all mains interruptions on ships. UPS-systems out of this range are certified by GL, DNV and BV and authorized for the supply of marine devices/consumers. The power ranges of 1 kVA, 1.5 kVA or 2 kVA are available short term / on stock. Furthermore, MGEC delivers customized UPS systems on demand with approvals for various classification societies.

Power Range >5kVA for Mega yachts or Cruise liners

Uninterrupted power supply is indispensable for ships, because it is absolutely essential to maintain the full functioning of important systems such as emergency lights, navigation, automation and communication in case of on-board mains failure.

RESISTORS AND LOAD BANKS

  • The fields of application in the marine sector for resistors are manifold, e.g.:
    • Resistors for the activation/control of bow thrusters of large vessels
    • Brake resistors for cranes on ships or ports
    • Load resistances for generator testing and for battery discharge
    • Neutral point grounding resistors for generators
    • Discharge resistors for submarine batteries
    • Braking resistors for coal conveyors

Resistors for cranes on vessels or in harbor facilities

MGEC has become established as a competent and reliable supplier within the shipbuilding sector. MGEC delivers braking or starting resistors for cranes on vessels or in harbor facilities all around the world.

Resistors for bow thrusters’ control

MGEC supplies braking- and starter resistors for the controlling of bow thrusters on vessels, plant II, according to customers’ requests. Various shipyards trust on the reliable quality of resistors.

Load banks for gensets

For testing of generators, we have special load bank series in a very compact version. On demand these load banks are remote controlled and have a precision of 1kW. For the individual load increments we use special stainless steel with low temperature coefficients to realize a nearly constant resistance value also during a temperature rise. MGEC provides load banks either, as permanent fixed position or as mobile version fixed on reels or trailers.

Neutral Earthing Resistors for Generators / Starpoint Earthing

Grounding resistors consist of the active electrical part (resistor block and control) and the resistor steel casing specially designed for the application (passive part). In principle, our partners provide the sheet steel casing for grounding resistors in a galvanized version or in stainless steel on request. Coated grounding resistors can be carried out in the colour of choice. For coating a high-performance powder coating on polyester basis is applied. Depending on size and weight the actual grounding resistance is encased in a self-supporting body housing or on a stable base frame. MGEC delivers grounding resistors with the protection class IP00, IP20, IP23 and IP54. Grounding resistors of our partners are employed worldwide – e.g., our neutral star point grounding resistances are of greatest importance on near shore transformer stations or on offshore platforms with multiple transformers. Numerous companies companies in the on- and offshore industry trust our technology. We are providing grounding resistances in the range of 12 up to 36 MV.

Discharging Resistors for generators and for battery discharging

Before delivery and after longtime use under partial load generators have to be teste with full load. Accordingly, MGEC offers corresponding high-power resistors up to 5MW per 20-foot-container. The load banks are connectable in parallel. For batter discharging it’s possible to switch the load steps depending on the current – this feature secures a controlled battery discharging.

Braking resistors for coal conveyors

Mainly inverter circuits with selectable frequencies based on drive technology are deployed to control AC motors. During necessary speed changes or decelerations in the drive train the frequency of the motor is higher than the output frequency of the frequency converter. In this case the motor works as a generator, generated energy is converted via a brake resistor into heat, which consequently leads to the deceleration of the motor. Brake resistors absorb power peaks. In wind parks without inverters brake resistors enable speed control of the generators, e.g. in gusting winds. In wind parks with inverters brake resistors are used to manage excess energy in case of power dips by absorbing energy of the inverter.

AC/DC CONVERTERS (RECTIFIERS)

Switched-mode rectifiers are available with output voltages of 12 V, 24 V, 48 V or 60 V. The rectifiers have a modular design and can be deployed both as power supply unit and charging unit. In combination with batteries the systems offer the optimal solution as uninterruptible DC supply for critical loads.

DC-Power Supply for Submarines

The shore power rectifiers Thyroiodin PS have been especially developed for the supply of conventional diesel-powered submarines. With these microprocessor-controlled rectifiers it is possible to provide conventional submarines with DC power from the onshore power supply. A low DC current ripple and a rapid dynamic behavior ensure that the submarine’s sensitive electronics do not sustain any damage.

Chargers for Submarine Batteries

MGEC delivers charging/discharging rectifiers for submarine batteries allow the full automated charging/discharging o submarine batteries up to 950 VDC with a current up to 3000 A. During discharging the battery’s power can be fed back into the grid in an environmentally friendly and useful way. MGEC offers this technology in cabinets, in mobile forms on a trailer or in standard-sized steel containers. The output voltages and currents of the charge/discharge containers correspond to the application concerned resp. to the type of submarine. The containers may include air-condition or may be supplied with CSC approval or a special degree of protection.

Ultrasonic liquid level switch with Integral sensor

As part of our marine sensor series the Ultrasonic liquid level integral sensor is manufactured in Polyphenylene Sulphone (PPS) for corrosion resistance in most liquids. The 003 range of sensors can be mounted in any position in a tank using either a 1” or 3/4” thread available in BSPP, BSPT and NPT thread forms. A thread is provided on each side of a hexagonal boss to allow either external or internal / pole mounting of the sensor. Comprising of a one-piece molded body with an integral pcb, the 003 switch is factory sealed and supplied with a 3m flying lead for customer connection. The switch is designed for high- or low-level alarm duties to give a voltage free changeover contact or dual solid state transistor output for alarm signaling or as part of a pump control system.

How it works

The molded body contains two piezo-electric crystals, one each side of a gap at the tip of the sensor. An ultrasonic signal is transmitted from one crystal into the gap, but if there is air or gas in the sensor gap then the signal is not received by the other crystal. However, if there is a liquid present, the signal will be transmitted, and the integral electronics will switch the output circuitry to signal the presence of a liquid.
